Homeschool Math curriculum reviews

Choosing a homeschool math curriculum can be a daunting task. Everyone has their favorite, and recommendations. It may seem like a sea of confusion at first - but once you grasp the key features and approaches of each curriculum (compare that with your child's learning abilities and preferences), it becomes easier to select a curriculum.

This page will link to various homeschool math curricula that we have used over the years, and those that came highly recommended by other parents.

Math curricula do not always use the same approach. The two most common  are the mastery and the spiral approaches.

In a mastery math approach, the student must have a complete comprehension of a topic, before moving to the next. The mastery approach is much more familiar to most homeschoolers.  The student is immersed in a particular topic to a point that they gain almost the whole picture, before moving on.  This is not limited to mathematics, and is used in other subjects as well.

The spiral approach introduces the basics of the topic, then moves on to the next, while circling back to the first topic (at a little more advanced level) i.e a little bit is added while new concepts are also introduced.

Understanding these approaches is the first step to selecting the best homeschool math curriculum for your children. It's not an all or nothing scenario. Both have their advantages (and reluctantly, disadvantages). Fewer topics tend to be covered by a mastery based math curriculum, but they are done in much more depth than in the spiral approach (which will cover  a wide variety of topics, in less depth than the mastery approach).
